40k and other musings

Warhammer 40k

Well its been a good 4-5yrs since I stopped playing 40k with Orks and Tau. A few months back I decided to give my Orks to a kid at our club (Portal Wargaming) as I wasn't going to play 40k again as I wasn't interested in it at that moment in time.

My friend Ed, who is the vice chairmen of the club decided to start playing 40k again, as there was going to be a new editon of 40k coming out soon. He started to build up his Red Scorpions which is mainly forge world parts to get for his force, so I was interested in what he was doing, then other people joined in with Ed either starting up a new force or adding to a existing army/armies they have got.

I thought that this was a good idea to get myself back into miniture wargaming and painting minitures (see last blog). I was gutted that I gave away my Orks to the kid a few months back, but decided to do either Blood Angels (my first 40k army) or Necrons, just going through the minitures of both factions I decided that I was going to do Necrons as they have got very nice models in the range for them.

So got the codex for the necrons and did2 500pt lists and here they are:

List 1

Overlord w/res orb and warscythe 130pts
2 units of 5 Necron Warriors (65pts each) 130pts
tomb blade w/neubloscope, shield vane 35pts
tomb blade w/neubloscope    25pts
Annilihation Barge 90pts
Annilihation Barge 90pts

total 500pts

List 2

Overlord
warscythe, res orb 130pts

Warriors x5 65pts
Warriors x5 65pts

Triarch praetorians 200pts

tomb blade 35pts
nebuloscope (bs 5), shield vanes (3+ save)

495pts
Im leaning towards the first list as it can deal with swarm (orks, tyranids, imperial guard) and heavy vehicles as well (space marines, imperial guard). But I would like to know your thoughts on these 2 lists, im still deciding what to include upwards to 750/1000/1500pts.

Other musings

I've started to play Halo: Reach again on my xbox 360 and having lots of fun on it again as it ha been quite a long time since I played it.

Also had a game Hordes vs Warmachine my Legion of Everbligh vs Khador, after a few cagey turns the Khador player failed at a assassination attempt agaisnt my caster (thragosh) which in turn allowed me to kill his caster (epic sorscha).

Hope you are enjoying this, please leave feedback as I like to make this better if I can :)

Cya soon

Bringing back the good old days!

Hey there!! Hows it going??

Right going to do this blogging business if it kills me lol. Its been 2yrs since my last post blog post, so what's been going on for that amount of time???

Well first of all work has been busy (as always), my club, Portal Wargaming Club has been going from strength to strength, last year we had 115 members in total, this year we are between 70-75 members so far. Also been playing loads of new tabletop wargames and card games, here are the new games that I got into in the last 2yrs.

Bringing the good old days of playing tabletop wargames and not just Magic the Gathering all the time lol

Well this card game has got alot of attention in the last 2yrs for me and Portal Wargaming       Club. Last year I decided that I was going to run a Magic league at the club, we had about 30 people take part in the league, overall it did very good and the club started to run FNM (Friday Night Magic) at Midco Toys, which is located in the center Burton-upon-Trent at the start of October/November 2011.

We also started doing pre-releases for MtG as well, which we get about 30-35 people over the weekend, of which these are alot of fun to run and participate in. For FNM we usually get between 8-20 people depending on what event we got organised for that particular friday night.

Easter Sunday this year me and 3 other friends went to a PTQ (pro tour qualifer) GP (grand prix) Manchester which was happening a month later. It was a great day for all of us, certainly intense of playing a card game lol. Me and a friend made top 8 of the event but unfortunately we lost in the quarter-finals of the event, it was a great experience to take part in and definately want to go to more PTQ's in the future.

Dystopian Wars is created by Spartan Games who are based in the UK (win!!). Here's what they say about Dystopian War's;

Imagine a world similar to our own, but subtly different. Now imagine the year is 1870 and the Industrial Revolution occurred decades earlier than in our own world. Technology is far advanced, and in many cases, unrecognisable, which has led to the development of fantastic naval vessels, hulking land ships and terror from the skies in the form of airships and war balloons.

The Dystopian Wars game is set in a Victorian Steampunk world and we have designed the rules to ensure a fun game with a large selection of high quality models in a couple of hours. The rules support Naval, Aerial and Land models from the outset, so that you can set up battles and scenarios in any combat setting.

You have got a varied factions that you can choose from, I've chosen Empire of The Blazing Sun, the Japanese faction of Dystopian Wars.

Think the WWII described in the Hellboy Graphic Novels and Films brought to life in 28mm scale. Zombies, Werewolfs, Vampires clash with the remaining humans as they battle it out for control of the ashes of Europe in battles with mechas, tanks and the undead!

Here are some photos of my Russians that I'm going to paint up soon!!

As you can already tell that I've sprayed, they just need finishing now, looking forward to the warebears in the last picture!

 Empire of the Dead

Here's what Westwind Productions have to about the game;

Welcome to the Empire of the Dead. It is 1888 and much of the world is in turmoil. The great discovery of the age, Infernium, has brought technological advancements barely dreamed of just a few years ago. Its discovery, however, has stirred the basest instincts of man and nature alike. The lines between right and wrong or good and evil have become blurred as factions battle not only for control of the streets but the very future of mankind.

From the forests of Eastern Europe to the rookeries of London, factions have come together in
their quest to defend the natural order of life or to simply achieve their own ends. When you step into the world of Empire of the Dead you enter a place where only your wits and tactical thinking offer hope of survival. As the leader of your Faction your task is to ensure that those who serve you survive whatever fate has to throw at them. In that way lies the route to your own advancement and enhanced power and influence. Your
position, though, requires you to also serve your own masters, the leaders of your clan, club or order. Only by doing that, however obscure their purpose may seem, can you hope to avoid the assassin’s knife or wellplaced
bullet.

Whether your allegiances lie with the Holy Orders of the Church, the Lycaon and their dedication to the protection of the natural order, the ancient evil of the Nosferatu or the gentlemen of the Clubs; the world that you are entering conceals many dangers and challenges for the unwary. In the Empire of the Dead nothing is as it seems. Today’s allies may be tomorrow’s sworn enemies and even the local populace may turn at a moment’s notice from a placid flock to an angry mob. Fame, fortune and unbelievable power will find those with the cunning and tenacity to survive the fortunes of the fight, ignominy and death await the rest. From the polluted streets of the city’s rookeries to the calm tranquillity of the countryside, nowhere is immune from the intrigue of the Empire. So set aside all that you know, be afraid of every corner and remember that myth and legend are just a way to hide the true horrors of the world.

The faction I'm doing is the Gentleman's Club;

Got the model's on my painting desk ready to go lol!

There's one more game system that I'm getting back into with quite a few others from Portal Wargaming Club and that is Warhammer 40k *shock horror*. It has been about 3-4yrs that I've stopped playing 40k as it was getting expensive to buy the models plus I got into other games that were cheaper and you dont need alot of models to play the game (look at Empire of the Dead, Dystopian Wars).

When I first started playing 40k (back in 2003/4???) I started with Blood Angels as they were cool, but this time I'm going to be playing with Necrons (the undead in space). I'm just starting with 500pts then I might decide wheather to continue with Necrons or do I go with Blood Angels as they were my first 40k army.

Magic the Gathering has pratically taken over my tabletop gaming for the last year and a half lol, so I'm getting back into playing tabletop over the next few months with quite alot of painting projects going on as well.

This is also one of the reasons Im going to re-start this blog to keep everyone updated with what im doing and how im getting on with my projects!!

Have fun everyone!!!

Portal Wargaming Club, Wargames Inc.

So Wednesday 20th came round for another week of Portal Wargaming Club. The club was started up back in February of this year as Games Workshop decided to close its gaming room in Burton, so me and 5 other people decided to start a club on wednesday nights. We had a look around at some places where we could set up and the best place to set up was at our local Army Salvation Citedel as the hall was large enough for what we need. Since then we have got 76 members mostly from word of mouth and from people who used to go to Games Workshop on a Tuesday night.

I finally had a chance to play Warhammer 8th edition since its release in March/April as I am going to the Winter Incursion at Maelstrom Games in Mansfield in December with Orcs & Goblins, so I need to get some practice in before I go. I was up against Dave with his Tomb Kings, so I eventually got out my army (lots of models lol). The scenario was battle for the pass, this sccenario requires you to play length ways not width ways as per normal.  To cut a long story short I lost as we ran out of time but it was a close game as we both had alot of our armies left so it could have gone either way. Next week i've got a game against another orc and goblin player Tim.

Yesterday me and 2 other mates we went to Wargames Inc. in Loughborough to play some games of Flames Of War which is a WW2 which is a 15mm wargame based of ww2 obviously lol. Im playinng a Soviet (Russian) infantry list of which I havent picked up any yet as the people at our club are using tanks as its easier to learrn tanks first then moving onto infantry. I played to games won 1 and lost 1 which isnt to bad really.

Today Im going to work this afternoon of which it will be 1 of 5 days at work that I will be doing, having a day off on wednesday for the club then im working from thursday to sunday. Im sooo going to be knackered next week.

Im might be able to update this blog next week if possible, it depends on how knackered I am lol!!

Have fun everyone!!!
